Working together

It’s important that we feel like a good fit for each other. So after you get in touch, I suggest we have a short phone or video call.

You can tell me a bit about what you're looking for, ask any questions, and get a sense of whether you’d feel comfortable talking to me. It also gives me a chance to make sure I can offer the right kind of support for you.

We can discuss how you’d like to meet – in person, online or outdoors – before arranging an initial session.

This first session gives us more time to get to know each other, explore what’s brought you to counselling and experience what working with me actually feels like. From there, we can decide together what might come next.

As we get started

We can take things at your pace and begin with whatever feels most important. You don’t need to present a polished version of yourself, or have the right words for everything.

Our first few sessions can be a bit like tipping the pieces of a jigsaw onto the table and starting to sort through them. There might be an obvious corner to start with – or we might spend a while looking at pieces of sky.

Mostly, we’ll talk. I’ll listen carefully, ask questions and try to understand what things are like for you. Over time, we might start to notice new connections – perhaps between what’s happening now and other experiences, relationships or feelings in your life.

Sometimes we might spend a little more time with a particular feeling, or notice how something feels in your body rather than trying to make sense of everything in words. We can also use drawing or other creative approaches if that feels more natural to you.

I might share something I’m noticing, offer a different perspective or bring in an idea that seems useful. Other times, you might simply need space to talk and be heard.

How I work

Finding our rhythm

I generally suggest meeting weekly when we first start. This gives us time to get to know each other and build on what comes up from one session to the next. You might have a particular number of sessions in mind, or you might prefer to leave that open.

However we start, we’ll keep checking in from time to time about what feels important to you and how you’d like to use the space.

We can meet face-to-face, online or outdoors. Indoor and online sessions usually last 50 minutes, while outdoor sessions can be longer and sometimes less frequent. Whichever way we meet, we can find a rhythm that works for us.

Interested in talking?

If you think we might work well together, I'd love to hear from you.
